Kennesaw was originally inhabited by Native American tribes. At that time, it was named as Big Shanty. In fact, it was the site of the Battle of Kennesaw Mountain during the American Civil War. Later on, the city was renamed after Kennesaw Mountain. However, some also believe that the city was named after an Indian chief. The city of Kennesaw was officially incorporated on September 21, 1887.Source
